Asparagus, Diameter, and What Actually Breaks in Transit

Table of Contents

Asparagus is bought on diameter and judged on tips. The two are not related, and that is where specifications usually go wrong.

Diameter is a caliper measurement, quoted in millimeters, and it decides how the spear reads on a plate and how it cooks. A 10 mm spear and a 14 mm spear behave differently in a hot pan, so a foodservice buyer who accepts either is choosing inconsistency.

Tip integrity is the harder grade. Tips are the most fragile part of the spear and the first place damage appears, usually not from freezing but from handling before it. Loose fill, overfilled cartons, and rough palletizing all leave marks that no downstream step reverses.

A buyer who writes only a diameter into the purchase order has specified half the product.

At NewsourceFoods, we quote asparagus by diameter range and confirm tip condition as a separate line in the specification, so both are checkable at receiving instead of argued about later. We supply IQF asparagus with OEM and ODM support, and loading is confirmed per order within 18 to 25 tons per 40-foot container depending on pack and spear size. Our operations run under ISO, HACCP, BRC, IFS, KOSHER, and HALAL.

If asparagus is on your next order list, send the diameter range you need and the pack format. We will come back with tip condition written in, not implied.
